‘Tis the season to make home-made Christmas cards. Tra-la-la, la-la, la la, la, lahhhhhh.
Kid-made Christmas cards seems to have become an annual Christmas tradition in our household. (In previous years, we’ve made Christmas lights fingerprint cards, bubble-wrap printed Christmas tree cards and Rudolph baby footprint cards.)
This year my eldest daughter JJ, who is 5.5 years old, has her right (dominant) hand in a cast, so we needed a Christmas card idea that she could do with her left hand. Here is what we came up with…
How to make Ribbon Tree Christmas Cards
You need:
- various green ribbon
- scissors
- clear contact paper (also called sticky back paper or self-adhesive protective liner)
- sticky tape
- clear drying craft / hobby PVA glue
- card
- ruler and pen (optional)
Method:
- Place a piece of contact paper, sticky side up, on a table, using sticky-tape to secure the corners.
- Pre-cut ribbon into strips slightly longer than the width of your contact paper piece.
- Choose ribbons that contrast in colour, texture or pattern, and stick onto the contact paper to make horizontal rows.
- Measure the dimensions of your card. Flip the contact paper over (so that the shiny side is up), and use the ruler and pen to draw ‘tree-shaped’ triangles to fit within your card dimensions. Cut out.
- Apply PVA glue to the shiny, contact paper side of your ‘ ribbon trees’ and stick on to the front of the card. Let dry.
- Add text (such as Merry Christmas) using a pen or permanent marker across the top if you wish.
I tested the idea out myself first, while JJ was at school, and made these five cards.
When JJ came home, she made nine more!
Interestingly JJ decided to incorporate my earlier offcuts into her design. I absolutely love the abstract effect!
We have lots more DIY Christmas ideas for kids , including:
- Easy paint swatch Christmas cards that my daughter made when she was 3 years old.
- ‘Christmas lights’ cards, made from toddler and preschooler fingerprints.
- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer cards, made from a baby footprint.
- Kid-made, process-oriented, bubble wrap stamped tree cards for preschoolers.
- Homemade gingerbread play dough or candy cane play dough for a bit of Christmassy sensory play.
- Super cute Mistletoes keepsake made from baby and older sibling footprints. (I love these ones. My heart wells every year when I pull these out of the box.)
- And more….
